Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. Lula was took office without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, the capital city.

The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.
